This exceptional Burmese sadaik manuscript chest dates to around 1900, from the early colonial period following the fall of the Konbaung dynasty. Likely originally displayed on a stand, this teak chest was used to store sacred Buddhist texts and ceremonial items.

The exterior is richly adorned in red lacquer with elaborate raised gilt decoration known as thayo€”a traditional Burmese technique where a hand-applied putty made from tree sap and ash is used to build ornate low-relief designs. Once gilded, the result is a textured and luminous surface that showcases remarkable artisanal skill.

Delicately carved floral patterns and depictions of Bodhisattvas cover the front panel in fine detail. The heavy lid boasts a deep, rich patina from over a century of use. Inside, the vibrant orange lacquered interior houses a small fitted candlebox€”originally intended to store wax and wicks for devotional use.

A stunning piece of Burmese heritage, both functional and sculptural, this chest makes an elegant and rare addition to any decorative scheme.
