This wire inlaid Mandalay dowry chest dates from the 19th century and is crafted from richly figured teak, enhanced with delicate brass-bound corners and finely executed brass wire inlay. Traditionally commissioned as part of a bride's marriage furnishings, chests such as this were prized possessions used to store clothing, jewellery, textiles and treasured family heirlooms. The warm patina of the teak, combined with the understated elegance of the brass detailing, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship associated with Burmese decorative arts of the period.
The front is decorated with intricate brass inlaid wirework forming geometric borders and stylised motifs characteristic of traditional Burmese design framed by brass corner mounts and strapping.
Opening the lid reveals a heavily carved interior framing an original mirror set into the underside of the lid, accompanied by decorative floral panels and intricate carved detailing. Beneath are multiple storage compartments, sliding and removable trays, and hidden sections designed to organise personal belongings and valuables.
Its proportions make it particularly versatile for contemporary interiors, functioning equally well as a substantial coffee table, blanket chest, storage trunk or decorative statement piece. Combining practical storage with exceptional craftsmanship and historic character, it is a wonderful example of 19th-century Burmese furniture.
