Ginger Jars

Filter

Elegant, practical, and deeply symbolic, Chinese ginger jars are among the most recognisable forms of traditional Chinese porcelain. Their rounded bodies and domed lids originated as utilitarian vessels during the Qin dynasty (221–206 BC), when they were used to store and transport spices, oils, salts, and teas. As the export of preserved ginger grew in the 18th century, these vessels became known in Europe as “ginger jars,” though in China they have long been called guan (罐) — meaning “jar.”

Over the centuries, the humble storage jar evolved into a refined art form, with potters decorating each piece in the prevailing styles of their time — from the celebrated blue and white porcelain of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) to later polychrome and copper-red designs of the Qing era. Today, their graceful proportions and hand-painted motifs make them as versatile as they are beautiful — perfect for both classic and contemporary interiors.

A History of Form & Function

Traditionally made in the porcelain workshops of China, ginger jars were thrown on the potter’s wheel, glazed, and hand-painted before being high-fired to achieve their glass-like finish. Designs often depict dragons, peonies, fish or the double happiness (囍) symbol, representing luck, prosperity and love. Once used to store provisions or present wedding gifts, these jars now serve as timeless decorative objects, celebrated for their symmetry and craftsmanship.

    Styling Chinese Ginger Jars

Each hand-painted ginger jar brings a touch of heritage to modern homes. Use a pair of large jars to frame a console or fireplace, or style smaller jars in clusters alongside vases to create balanced displays. Their sculptural forms and intricate motifs complement natural wood, marble and linen, offering a harmonious link between East and West, tradition and modern design.

    Contemporary Craftsmanship

Our collection features contemporary ginger jars handcrafted in the traditional way, preserving the same artistry that defined their imperial predecessors. Each piece is unique—painted, glazed, and fired by hand—continuing a lineage that spans over two millennia of Chinese porcelain craftsmanship.
