Our Japanese Snow Lanterns collection features both Yukimi-dōrō (雪見灯籠, “snow-viewing lanterns”) and Ishi-dōrō (石灯籠, “stone lanterns”), two of the most iconic forms in traditional Japanese garden design. Hand-carved from stone, these lanterns embody balance, calm, and the subtle interplay between light and nature.

    The Yukimi-dōrō – Snow-Viewing Lantern

The Yukimi-dōrō originated during Japan’s Edo period and is often placed beside ponds or pathways. Its broad, upturned roof is designed to catch snow in winter, creating a tranquil contrast between stone and white. The wide base and elegant curves give it a grounded yet graceful presence, ideal for reflecting the changing seasons within a garden setting.

The Ishi-dōrō – Traditional Stone Lantern

The Ishi-dōrō traces its origins to Buddhist temples, where lanterns symbolised the light of wisdom. Over time, they became integral to tea gardens and Shinto shrines, expressing the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in simplicity and impermanence. Our Ishi-dōrō lanterns are available in two sizes, offering the flexibility to complement both intimate courtyards and larger landscaped settings.

    Craftsmanship & Placement

Carved from granite and sandstone, our Japanese garden lanterns are designed to age beautifully, developing a natural patina that deepens with time. Traditionally, they are positioned beside paths, near water features, or among moss and foliage to evoke quiet reflection and harmony with the landscape.

Pair these pieces with Japanese Tansu or stone planters to create serene, balanced outdoor spaces that honour traditional Japanese garden philosophy.
