These glass Hundi lanterns — also known in India as Handi lamps — are hand-blown by skilled artisans, continuing a tradition of elegance that began in the 19th century. Originally produced in Europe and exported to India for use in grand residences and palaces, they became a hallmark of refined Anglo-Indian lighting design.
Original handi lanterns were designed to hold a candle or oil lamp, their domed lid preventing soot from blackening the ceiling. Many early examples survived in India’s tall colonial interiors, while their European counterparts were often lost as electricity replaced candlelight. Today, the form endures — reimagined as a pendant light that complements both period and contemporary spaces.

Illumination with History
Every glass pendant can be wired for modern filament bulbs or with a traditional three-way brass fitting, offering both historical accuracy and contemporary performance. Whether hung singly in an entrance hall or in multiples above a dining table, a Hundi lamp brings the quiet poetry of 19th-century craftsmanship into the modern home.
