This is a fine example of a Burmese military chest from the 19th century, It would make a great coffee table. It has a compartmentalized top section with a beautifully carved candle box and a sturdy chain to prevent the lid from falling open. It is constructed from beautifully patinated teak, bound with brass corners, and has a historic repair patch on the lid.
Military chests were used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour, they were made to order and had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit. Woods used were dependent on rank, and chests were reinforced with brass or iron corners for extra strength.
