Tibetan antique furniture with original painting was always unusual to find but is incredibly difficult to come by. This very decorative chest is from Central Tibet and dates to the 17th century. It is one of our favorite pieces from an excellent quality recently acquired collection we've acquired.
Lacquered and painted, the main feature is a pair of confronting dragons with lashing tongues clasping jewels in their claws. The dragons face a central wheel of dharma. The field contains kati rimo latticework subtly interspersed with auspicious symbols. This is all framed by a Nepalese 'rice pattern'.

Tibetan chests and trunks were used as storage in homes and monasteries. The better quality pieces are painted onto fabric on wood like this one.
Antique Tibetan furniture is becoming increasingly rare and is often found covered in a sticky residue. This is due to the continual burning of yak butter lamps. Our expert team has sensitively restored this piece, cleaning the residue whilst retaining its age and patina.
