This incredibly sturdy Indian pithara dowry Chest, dating back to the 19th century, features a combination of wood, brass and iron in its construction. This teak dowry chest offers ample storage and is ideal for larger spaces. The brass decorative panels each contain various Indian animals as well as stylised horse riders. The heavy lid features old patches where repair work has once taken place.
This style of pithara is from a Kathi home in Saurashtra which is in Gujarat, and was known in the local dialect as a pataro. The Kathi were a ruling caste in Saurashtra and these chests would have contained a grand dowry. It is perfect for storage of bedding for occasional guests.
