Antique Chinese chests and boxes combine artistry and utility — from painted opera & bridal chests of Shanxi to aromatic camphor wood trunks from Shanghai and Tianjin, plus red lacquer and leather-clad travel chests.
Painted Opera & Bridal Chests - Shanxi Province
Chinese opera chests given to a bride on her wedding day. They were made from the wood of a paulownia tree, usually planted at the birth of a girl. Painted using traditional mineral and stone pigments, these late-Qing pieces depict theatre scenes, celebration and prosperity. Originally used to store clothing, textiles and treasured possessions, they now make striking coffee tables or blanket chests that bring colour and cultural depth to contemporary rooms. Opera chests were mostly produced between 1880 & 1940.
Camphor Wood Chests - Shanghai & Tianjin
Camphor trunks were prized for their fine grain, honeyed tone and naturally insect-repellent aroma — ideal for silks and textiles. Their clean proportions and robust joinery suit minimalist, coastal or rustic interiors while offering practical, fragrant storage.
Lacquered & Leather-Clad Trunks - Shanghai
Shanghai leather trunks were fashionable from the late 19th century onwards. Mostly plain and crafted from pig leather, some were red lacquered with raised gilt work. These pieces balance durability with ornament. Use as low side tables, end-of-bed storage or statement hallway pieces.
Regions, Materials & Authenticity
Key centres include Shanxi (painted opera/bridal chests on paulownia), Gansu (lacquered chests), and Shanghai & Tianjin (camphor trunks and leather cases). Every piece is a genuine antique selected for patina, joinery and condition; restoration focuses on stability while preserving original finishes, pigments and fittings.
Styling & Care
Anchor a neutral scheme with a painted opera chest, pair camphor with linen and stone for quiet luxury, or add warmth with a cinnabar-red lacquer trunk. Dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid heat or chemical cleaners to protect lacquer and original paint.
