Chinese traditional antique camphor trunks were typically produced in sets and were uncarved, one made for the husband and other other for the wife. This Chinese camphor chest is from Tianjin and dates to circa 1900. Chinese camphor trunks were traditionally utilized for storing clothing. They were made from camphor wood, a natural deterrent against moths and insects and therefore safeguarded clothes and silk garments. Additionally, the wood emits a delightful, distinct aroma. The brass fittings are original.
Note that many carved camphor trunks were made in China for expats and to be exported to the market. Chinese Carved camphor trunks were made in vast quantities and saturated the market significantly reducing the value.
