Traditional Chinese camphor boxes were typically produced in sets and were uncarved. It was not until they began producing for the Western market that camphor chests became featured exuberant carving. This Chinese camphor box is from Tianjin and dates to the 19th century. Although larger Chinese camphor trunks were traditionally used for storing clothing, these smaller boxes would have stored valuable smaller items and this one has a tray to separate compartments. Chinese camphor boxes and trunks used camphor wood as a natural deterrent against moths and insects and therefore safeguarded clothes and silk garments. Camphor wood emits a distinct pleasant aroma.

Most of the brass fittings are original, the front lock plate has been replaced with another old brass plate. This box can be particularly prized for its one piece top.

Note that many carved camphor trunks were made in China for expats and to be exported to the market. Chinese Carved camphor trunks were made in vast quantities and saturated the market significantly reducing the value.
