These striking antique chests originate from Gansu province, China, but display a distinct Mongolian influence in their painted decoration. The top, front and side panels are richly adorned with bold floral motifs, peony blossoms in vases symbolising prosperity and beauty, framed by auspicious birds (phoenixes and cranes). The use of deep reds, yellows, and blacks reflects the vibrant Mongolian palette often seen in religious and domestic furniture of the region.

The chests would have originally served as a storage pieces, combining practicality with symbolic artistry. The detailed paintwork shows signs of age and wear, enhancing their character and authenticity. Today, they make a stunning decorative statement piece, perfect for adding colour and history to an interior. Beautiful from every side!
