A beautifully painted late 19th century opera chest from Shanxi Province, Northern China, richly decorated with traditional theatrical scenes and symbolic floral motifs. Crafted from lightweight paulownia wood, this striking antique chest reflects the artistry and storytelling traditions associated with Chinese domestic furniture of the Qing Dynasty period.
The front panel features finely painted figures set within an interior scene inspired by Chinese opera, framed by intricate borders and decorative floral panels in deep black, red and gilt tones. Historically, chests of this type were often part of a bride’s dowry, with paulownia wood — known as tong mu (桐木) — symbolising prosperity, happiness and enduring marriage. The warm aged patina to the interior contrasts beautifully with the detailed lacquered exterior, while the generous internal storage makes the piece as practical as it is decorative.
Opera chests are frequently associated with travelling opera troupes due to their painted scenes, although this romanticised history is now widely considered unlikely. Instead, they remain important examples of regional craftsmanship and Chinese decorative painting traditions from Shanxi.
Like all our pieces, this chest has been sympathetically restored while retaining the wear, imperfections and character acquired over more than a century of use.
