This antique Indian chest is from Nagaur in Northern India and dates to the 19th century. It is painted on all four sides with a beautiful repeating floral pattern. Red lacquer beading running along the edge of the chest frames the painting. Nagaur is one of the four Rajput schools in the area known as Marwar and is well-reputed for its beautiful style of painting.
Our workshop team has painstakingly cleaned this piece whilst retaining its age and patina. This chest still has its wheels which are usually removed or broken. The lid opens to reveal a generous interior space. To prevent the lid from falling open, a chain has been added.
Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
