This 19th-century teak chest from India is a fine example of traditional craftsmanship, reinforced with iron banding for strength and durability. Chests of this type were made in a wide variety of regional styles, reflecting the diverse cultures and influences that shaped Indian furniture making.
The chest features a practical candle box inside and a sturdy iron chain that prevents the lid from falling back when opened. Its heavy iron fittings, side handles, and riveted bindings give it a robust character while the teak has developed a rich, timeworn patina over the centuries. Both practical and decorative, it makes an ideal storage piece with strong historical presence.
