Old Indian Chest with Later Paint - 19thC

This late 19th century Rajasthani chest has been upcycled and painted in traditional Rajasthani patterns some time over the past 40 years. Its vibrant style is a refreshing change from the sometimes austere military chests of the 19th century and the vibrant colours and patterns reflect a rich Indian tradition of painting furniture and household objects.  

The chest has a large interior compartment, candle box, metal bar to stop the chest from falling completely open and a hidden compartment on the underside which was used to hide away cash and valuables.
