This superb 19th-century Anglo-Indian military chest is a fine example of the travelling furniture used by British officers stationed in India. Made from richly patinated teak, it retains all its original brass fittings, including the corner strapping and side carrying handles designed for durability and transport. The interior reveals a generous storage space with a fitted candle box and a sturdy chain that supports the lid when open, preventing strain on the hinges.
Military chests such as this were purpose-built to endure long journeys and rough handling while protecting officers’ personal belongings and uniforms. Today, it makes a striking and practical piece for modern interiors, ideal as a coffee table or storage trunk.
