This beautifully patinated iron-bound chest is from Gujarat and dates to the early 19th century. It is constructed from teak wood. Most likely it was custom made for a wealthy family to stash away dowry, family treasures, or cash from the prying eyes of extended family members.

The interior consists of a large storage space. A sturdy iron chain prevents the lid from falling fully open.

Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
