This beautifully patinated iron-bound chest is from Gujarat and dates to the 19th century. It is constructed from teak wood. Most likely it was custom-made for a wealthy family to stash away dowry, family treasures, or cash from the prying eyes of extended family members.

The central panel opens and reveals a large interior space. There is also a secret compartment accessible by a sliding door fixed in the interior.

Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
