This 19th-century iron-bound teak chest from Gujarat was most likely custom-made for a wealthy household to store dowry, valuables, or family treasures. Its solid teak construction is reinforced with heavy iron fittings, while layers of old painted finishes in muted reds, greens, and browns create a naturally distressed surface with rich depth and character.

Inside, the chest contains a candle compartment for convenience, and a sturdy iron chain prevents the lid from falling fully open. Practical and robust, this chest combines utility with decorative appeal. Chests of this kind are found in an extraordinary variety of forms across India, each reflecting the diverse cultural influences and craftsmanship of their region.
