This exceptional mid-19th century teak wood chest from Gujarat is a superb example of traditional Indian craftsmanship. Restored with care in our Wiltshire workshop, it retains its original charm while being made practical for contemporary living. The beautifully aged teak has developed a rich patina over time, enhanced by original hand-forged iron corner mounts and sturdy side handles.

A particularly striking feature is the set of hidden wheels, cleverly concealed behind ornately hand-carved floral covers€”adding both function and aesthetic appeal. The spacious interior includes a practical chain to hold the lid open, a candle box, and even a secret compartment€”ideal for discreet storage. This chest would make a stunning (albeit slightly taller than usual) coffee table or storage piece in any home.

Indian chests like this were traditionally used to store textiles, jewellery, or currency, and often reflected the regional artistic influences of the time. For more on the diversity of Indian furniture forms, see Furniture from British India and Ceylon by Amin Jaffer (V&A Publications, 2001).
