This 19th century Burmese chest is made to British military standards from the 19th century. Also called a Burmese campaign chest, these were Burmese copies of the Anglo-Indian Military chests which were originally used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour. There was a British presence in Burma in the 19th century so it is likely this was made for someone stationed in Burma.

It is crafted from beautiful Burmese teak wood which is more highly valued than Indian teak. The top and front are both made from single planks of teak. This particular piece has developed a wonderful patina from constant use over the past 100 years. There is a compartment in the lid used for storing important documents and paper. The interior candle box would have been used for storing candles. Two lid stops on the back of the chest prevent the lid from falling open completely. An old sticker and painted swastica (a religious symbol in Hindu & Burmese culture) can be seen on the inside of the lid, hinting at the long and varied life this piece has had.

These chests had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit, they were exceptionally well made. Better quality pieces have recessed brass like this one.
