This handsome 19th century Anglo-Indian brass bound military chest is a superb example of the robust campaign furniture commissioned by officers serving in British India. Crafted from beautifully figured solid teak, it retains a rich, warm patina developed over generations of use, while its original brass corner straps, reinforcing mounts and iron carrying handles speak to its practical military origins. Designed to endure the rigours of long-distance travel, these chests combined exceptional craftsmanship with outstanding durability.

Perfectly proportioned as a substantial coffee table or blanket chest, the interior offers generous storage alongside several thoughtful features. A traditional candle box occupies one corner, complete with its original removable base, revealing a concealed storage compartment beneath for valuables or important documents. A sturdy retaining chain supports the lid when open, preventing unnecessary strain on the original hinges and demonstrating the careful attention to functional detail typical of high-quality military chests.

Originally made to accompany officers of the British Indian Army on campaign, military chests were built to withstand repeated transportation by ship, rail and cart while protecting personal possessions from the elements. The extensive brass bindings reinforced the joints against constant movement and impact, whilst the solid teak construction offered excellent resistance to changes in climate and humidity. Today, these historic chests remain as practical as they are decorative, making an impressive statement piece with a fascinating history.

The chest remains in good antique condition with honest age-related wear that enhances its character. It retains its original brass and iron fittings, and there is an old, sympathetically executed repair patch to the top, reflecting its long working life and adding to its authentic story. There is also some Indian script carved into the top of this chest.
