This antique brass-bound Anglo-Indian military chest dates to the 19th century and is an excellent size for use as a coffee table. Constructed from beautifully patinated teak, it retains its original brass and iron fittings, including robust corner braces, lock plate, and side carrying handles. The warm, even colouring of the timber and the honest wear across its surface give the piece a wonderfully authentic character.
Inside, the chest features one large, open storage compartment and a sturdy internal chain designed to prevent the lid from falling open—an important feature for protecting the hinges during heavy use. Purpose-built for army officers of the British Indian Army, these chests travelled across the subcontinent on military campaigns and were expected to endure tough conditions. Each was made to order, providing secure storage for uniforms, personal belongings, and essential kit while on tour.
