This colourful Indian chest has been decorated with painted hearts and tulips in the style of Pennsylvania German chests. The paintwork is modern but the chest underneath is an antique dating to the 1920's. The interior consists of a large storage space with a fitted candle box. The date 1798 painted on the rear defines it as paintwork copied from an original chest in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art which is illustrated in The Pennsylvania German Decorated Chest by Fabian, fig. 221.
