Painted & Lacquered Indian Decor

Filter

A curated collection of painted and lacquered Indian decor — from vibrant Rajasthani boxes and bajots to intricately painted trays, torans and temple panels. Each piece reveals the colour, storytelling and skilled handcraft that define India’s decorative traditions.

    Rajasthani Colour & Tradition

Across Rajasthan and Gujarat, artisans have long used lacquer, gesso and mineral pigment to decorate domestic and ceremonial objects. Floral scrolls, birds and mythological scenes were painted onto teak, and papier-mâché — surfaces then burnished with coloured lacquer for a luminous finish. These pieces bring that regional artistry to life, combining folk narrative and fine detail.

    Painted Boxes, Bajots & Torans

The collection includes painted dowry boxes, low bajot tables once used for offerings, and door torans adorned with auspicious motifs. Each is unique — hand-crafted, layered in age-softened pigment, and finished with a gentle sheen of lacquer that enhances both depth and durability. Their vibrant patina adds warmth and character to any space.

    Folk Art & Contemporary Harmony

These painted and lacquered objects embody India’s folk aesthetic — expressive yet balanced, rhythmic yet imperfect. Whether styled as wall art, displayed on shelving, or used functionally, they introduce texture, pattern and history into modern interiors, creating a dialogue between the past and present.

    Craftsmanship & Restoration

Each item is carefully restored by hand in our Wiltshire workshops, preserving its original pigment layers, lacquer sheen and handmade character. Restored with respect rather than renewal, these works celebrate authentic craftsmanship and enduring artistry — testaments to the spirit of Indian decorative design.
