This antique Indian coffee table dates to the 19th century and is a piece from the Bohra community, a Muslim trading group known for commissioning finely made domestic furniture. These tables are locally called takhat — a low daybed traditionally used by the wealthy merchant classes of various North Western Indian states. Crafted from richly patinated teak, it features three deep drawers and bold turned red lacquered legs, a distinctive hallmark of Gujarati craftsmanship.
The design shows a fascinating blend of Indian and Western influences, with its practical drawers and brass handles reflecting the colonial presence in India during the 19th century. A statement piece for any interior, this takhat makes an ideal coffee table or low console, combining history, function, and sculptural form.
