Square Bajot Low Table From Shekhawati - 19th Century

This antique Indian bajot low table dates to the 19th century and comes from Shekhawati in Rajasthan. Traditionally, bajots were versatile pieces of low furniture used for everyday dining as well as for displaying or preparing items associated with leisure, including writing equipment and opium paraphernalia.

Made from roheda wood, this example has a relatively simple design compared with the more elaborately carved and lacquered bajots found in Shekhawati. The square top is decorated with a large, subtly carved mandala, its lines softened by generations of use. The numerous marks and scratches across the surface add to its character and are an appealing record of its working life.

The top is further decorated with brass corner plates and small brass studs, while carved notches run along the edges of the base. Four expertly turned low legs complete the table, retaining traces of their original dark lacquered finish.
