Lacquered Tobacco Box From Rajasthan - 19th Century

This 19th-century lacquered tobacco box from Rajasthan is a rare survivor of a once common tradition. Originally used for storing tobacco or opium, these vessels were sealed to protect their contents from moisture. Today, examples like this - particularly those retaining their vibrant lacquer - are increasingly difficult to find.

This piece is distinguished by its flattened circular form and its bold patterning: undulating red wave motifs radiate from the opening, bordered by rich green speckled lacquer and warm ochre bands. The design reflects the Sindhi influence on Rajasthani craft, as lacquering was a technique brought across the border and perfected by artisans in Rajasthan and Kutch. Although the lid is now missing, the vessel itself remains a striking decorative object, over 120 years old, full of history and colour.

Created on a hand-powered lathe, the lacquer was applied by pressing coloured lac sticks against the revolving wood. Craftsmen incised fine patterns into the surface, revealing contrasting layers beneath and producing the lively textures seen here. Such vessels were not only used for tobacco but also for storing jewellery or bindi powder, making them both functional and ornamental.
