This striking carved sideboard from Xinjiang province in western China is an example of adaptive craftsmanship and regional identity. Originally constructed as a daybed, this piece has been creatively repurposed€”its depth reduced and its fixed panels converted into four functional cupboard doors. The result is a highly decorative and spacious low cabinet, ideal as a dining room feature or as a distinctive TV stand.
Made from local pine and poplar bleached to a pale natural finish, the front panels are adorned with intricate geometric carving and Moorish-style arches€”a style influenced by the Silk Road cultures of neighbouring Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Pakistan. Traces of the original brightly coloured paint are still visible, softening the rugged structure with a whisper of its once-vibrant past.
