This charming 19th century Tibetan side table is beautifully decorated with a pair of Snow Lions flanking a double vajra (vishvavajra) enclosing the Auspicious Wheel. Richly painted in deep reds, ochres and black, the front panel is framed by finely carved geometric borders, while the top and sides have worn back over time to reveal the beautiful natural timber and a wonderfully mellow patina.

The Snow Lion is one of Tibet's most revered mythical creatures, symbolising fearlessness, joy and the strength to overcome obstacles. Between them sits the double vajra (vishvavajra), representing indestructibility, absolute stability and the unshakeable foundation of Buddhist wisdom. At its centre is the Auspicious Wheel, an ancient protective symbol associated with good fortune, harmony and the safeguarding of the home and its occupants. Together, these powerful motifs were intended to invoke strength, stability and protection.

The contrast between the richly painted front and the beautifully weathered timber elsewhere gives the table a particularly authentic character. Originally made for everyday domestic use, it is equally suited today as a side table, bedside table or decorative stand, bringing centuries of Tibetan artistry and symbolism into a contemporary interior.
