This elegant 19th-century glazed book cabinet dates from the British Raj period and was likely crafted in Gujarat, northern India. Constructed from richly figured teak, it embodies the restrained practicality and enduring quality associated with colonial administrative furniture. Cabinets of this type were commonly found in government offices, libraries, and civil service buildings, where they were used to store books, ledgers, and important documents behind protective glazed doors.
The cabinet features a warm, beautifully aged teak exterior complemented by an attractive soft green-painted interior, creating a striking contrast that highlights displayed books, ceramics, and decorative objects. Double glazed doors open to reveal five shelves, offering generous storage and display space. The cabinet retains its original brass hardware, including the lock and handle fittings, and has been sympathetically restored in our workshops to preserve its historical character while ensuring it remains suitable for contemporary use.
With its clean architectural form, warm timber tones, and unusual green interior, this handsome cabinet would work equally well in a study, kitchen, living room, or retail setting, providing both practical storage and period charm.
