This remarkable 19th-century painted almirah from Gujarat is a beautifully proportioned architectural cabinet, richly hand-carved and retaining its original mirror frontage. The tall arched door, framed by deeply carved columns and an ornate pediment, gives the piece a striking Gothic character — an unusual and captivating blend of Indian craftsmanship with European stylistic influence.
The carved surround is adorned with scrolling foliage, floral motifs and rope-twist columns, all highlighted by traces of historic paint in soft ochres, creams and muted greens. The original mirror plate has gently foxed and aged over time, creating a softly distressed surface that adds depth and authenticity. The worn reflective surface enhances the cabinet’s romantic, timeworn presence.
Inside, the almirah opens to reveal three practical shelves, offering useful storage while maintaining its strong decorative impact.
