This charming polychromed wooden peacock figure originates from Surat, Gujarat, and dates to around 1900. Hand-carved and richly decorated, the sculpture retains traces of its original painted and gilded surface, with beautifully aged tones of gold, red and green lending the piece a wonderfully timeworn character.

Stylised in form yet elegant in posture, the peacock stands proudly upon a painted plinth base decorated with traditional floral motifs. The surface wear, fading and layers of patina speak to the figure’s age and long decorative history, enhancing its authenticity and sculptural appeal. The delicately painted feather detailing and elongated neck reflect the decorative folk traditions of Western India during the late 19th and early 20th century.

In Indian culture, the peacock is associated with beauty, prosperity and divine protection, making figures such as this both decorative and symbolic. Displayed on a shelf, console or within a collection of folk and devotional art, this piece brings warmth, colour and character to an interior.
