This charming 19th century carved teak elephant originates from Gujarat and showcases the rustic artistry of village woodcarvers from the region. Sculpted from a single solid block of teak, the figure carries the stylised panniers and harness typical of working elephants once used for transport and ceremonial duties. Its weathered surface and softened edges speak to many decades of handling and use, giving it a wonderfully tactile, timeworn character.
Pieces like this were traditionally created either as votive offerings or as decorative objects within village homes, each one entirely unique. The weight and density of the teak, along with the elephant’s strong, purposeful stance, make it an evocative example of Gujarati folk carving.
