This expressive carved teak Gangaur figure from Jodhpur (circa 1910) is a wonderful example of Rajasthan’s vibrant folk tradition. Gangaur figures are associated with the spring festival honouring Gauri (Parvati) and are typically displayed in household shrines. This example retains remarkable traces of its original painted decoration, including vivid reds, yellows and silvers that highlight the figure’s features and attire.

The figure is shown in traditional Rajasthani dress, with painted trousers and detailed body ornaments, along with characteristic folk-style facial makeup. A particularly notable detail is the long, tied-back hair, a style seen in older Gangaur depictions. Age-related losses to the arms and pigment only enhance its authenticity. The figure stands on an old wooden platform, giving it a commanding yet intimate presence.
