Painted Gangaur Figures - Ca 1940

This charming pair of hand-painted wooden Rajasthani figures date from around 1940 and beautifully capture the decorative folk artistry of Northern India. Dressed in traditional regional attire, the figures retain traces of their original richly coloured paintwork, with warm reds, pinks and earthy tones softened by decades of natural wear and age.

Carved by hand and mounted on simple wooden bases, the figures possess a wonderfully expressive quality. Their weathered surfaces, worn paint layers and visible imperfections give them a distinctive character and authenticity that can only come with time. Decorative details to the garments and jewellery remain visible beneath the aged patina, adding further depth and charm.

Originally likely created as ceremonial, devotional or decorative figures, they now make striking display objects within eclectic, antique or collected interiors. Their sculptural form and beautifully distressed finish lend themselves particularly well to wabi-sabi and folk art-inspired spaces. Each piece sold seperately.
