Painted Almirah Cabinet From Gujarat - 19th Century

This striking 19th-century Indian almirah cabinet is a beautifully proportioned example of traditional subcontinental craftsmanship. Unlike many Indian cupboards that were originally recessed into architectural niches, this is a freestanding piece — a less common and highly practical form. Its façade is richly decorated with hand-painted geometric and urn motifs, framed in soft terracotta, blue and cream tones that have gently mellowed over time.

The surface displays an authentic distressed painted finish with delicate crackling and layers of worn colour, creating exceptional depth and texture. A finely carved frieze runs along the top, featuring scrolling foliage, while the shaped base and carved apron add further sculptural detail. Inside, the cabinet opens to reveal a warm-toned wooden interior fitted with three shelves, offering generous storage. Two drawers set into the base, each with brass cup handles, provide additional practicality.
