Description

This impressive 19th century Bombay almirah cabinet on chest is crafted from solid rosewood. Bombay furniture is distinguished by its exceptionally rich hand carved decoration. This style is influenced by British campaign furniture which is particularly visible when looking at the lower chest of drawers. The rich rosewood, has developed a deep, warm patina through generations of age and use.

The upper cabinet has a pair of glazed doors with elegant arched openings, surrounded by densely carved foliate borders. Further floral and scrolling vine carving runs across the substantial cornice, giving the cabinet an almost architectural quality.

An exciting and unusual feature is the secret drawer concealed beneath the cornice (the carved panel above the glazed doors).

Internally, the glazed upper section is fitted with shelves, making it ideal for displaying books, ceramics or a collection while keeping them protected. The lower chest provides considerable additional storage, with two smaller drawers above three large full width drawers, all fitted with brass campaign-style recessed handles and escutcheons. The brass door edging is a feature found on premium Indian furniture.

Raised on turned bun feet, the cabinet combines elements of traditional Indian craftsmanship with the European influenced furniture forms produced in Bombay during the colonial period.

At just over two metres high, this is a substantial statement piece with both considerable presence and practical storage. This piece can come apart into three seperate sections to make transport easier.
