Mughal Bajot From Patan - 18th Century

This beautiful 18th century Mughal bajot from Patan, Gujarat, is an exceptional example of the finely crafted low tables that formed an essential part of daily life in northern India. Traditionally used for dining while seated on the floor, bajots also served as elegant platforms for writing, reading, religious offerings or displaying prized possessions such as opium sets and personal leisure items.

The sides are richly decorated with intricate openwork jali carving, scrolling floral vines and delicately carved borders, demonstrating the influence of Mughal design that flourished throughout Gujarat during the 17th and 18th centuries. The turned legs retain traces of their original red and green pigments, while the tabletop bears the beautifully worn surface that only centuries of use can create.

Constructed from solid hardwood with hand-forged iron corner brackets and decorative floral studs, this piece perfectly balances functionality with artistry. Today it makes a wonderful coffee table, display plinth or decorative centrepiece, bringing warmth, history and craftsmanship to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
