This impressive antique Indian coffee table is formed from a traditional takhat daybed, dating to the 19th century. Originally used by wealthy merchant families, particularly in regions such as Shekhawati, takhats served as both seating and resting platforms within the home. This example, sourced from Hyderabad, has been beautifully preserved and adapted for modern use.
Crafted from richly patinated roheda wood—a hardwood closely related to teak and prized for its durability—the table features finely carved friezes running along the apron, showcasing intricate floral and scrolling motifs. The solid plank top, with its timeworn surface and visible construction details, adds to the authenticity and character of the piece, while the turned legs and iron supports provide both strength and visual balance.
A striking and versatile piece, this takhat coffee table makes a superb rustic centrepiece, equally suited to a living room, conservatory or relaxed interior setting.
