This antique star shaped painted wood Indian bajot prayer table is an excellent and unusual example dating to the 19th century. It is from Rajasthan and would have been used for daily prayer. The shape of the table is that of a Rub el Hizb known as the Islamic Star formed by two overlapping squares. This is likely influenced by the Mughal period in India (1526€“1761), however, it became widely used by many cultural groups in Rajasthan. Star bajots are found in many styles around India.
The beautifully detailed original polychrome paintwork is classically Mughal in style and features a lotus mandala, the Nava Padma Mandala, a Hindu design most often associated with the worship of Lord Shiva. The lotus often symbolises purity and rebirth.
