This sitting Burmese Buddha is a lovely example of the Mandalay style. This sitting Mandalay Buddha is made in the traditional way from carved teak wood which is then red lacquered and gilded. This Buddha dates to the middle of the Mandalay period, circa 1890.
As is traditional of this style, Buddha here has beautiful detailing with painted glass eyes and robes inlaid with precious stones and coloured glass. He sits in vajrasana, with his right hand gesturing to the earth in the bhumisparsa mudra. His uttarasanga (robes of fully ordained Buddhist monks) covers his arms and chest. The sanghati (the outer robe hanging from the shoulder) falls in folds from his left shoulder.
As can be seen in the photographs there is some wear conducive with age. Our workshop has sympathetically conserved this piece to avoid any further losses. The Mandalay period was between 1853 - 1948 and ended with Burmese independence from The British.
