This 19th-century Burmese carved wooden monk is a particularly characterful example of traditional Buddhist sculpture, distinguished by its beautifully aged black lacquer and worn gilding. The figure has a wonderfully serene expression, with downcast eyes, elongated earlobes and gracefully flowing robes.
The monk stands barefoot, with both hands extended in gentle gestures. His robes fall in broad folds, while the contrast between the deep black lacquer and areas of exposed gilding gives the piece a striking presence. The naturally worn surface has developed a rich patina, adding considerable depth and character.
Of particular interest is the sculpture's provenance, tracing its history to the renowned Pitt Rivers collection. An inscription on the reverse records "Burmese. J. Webster. 1897. P.1436", providing a fascinating link to its early collecting history. According to the accompanying provenance, the figure subsequently appeared at auction, where it was purchased by D. Webster for 45 shillings. The original display base also bears an early inscription identifying the figure as Burmese.
The Pitt Rivers collection is celebrated for its extensive holdings of ethnographic and cultural objects gathered during the 19th century, making this documented association especially interesting.
