This stunning gilded teak standing Mandalay Buddha is from Burma and was crafted during the Mandalay period (1853 - 1948), more specifically circa 1930's. Buddha can be seen here wearing traditional Burmese attire with inlaid coloured glass decoration, this Buddha stands on a lotus flower mounted on a later teak wood pillar base.

Unusually for a Mandalay Buddha, his hands do not hold his robes, and instead, his left hand forms the varada mudra whilst holding the fruit of the myrobalan, a bitter medicinal fruit. The myrobalan fruit is often seen held by Mandalay Buddhas. Varada mudra symbolises charity and boon granting whilst dedicating one's self to the salvation of humanity.

During the Mandalay period (1853 - 1948) King Mindon moved the Burmese capital from Amarapura to a new site called Mandalay.
