Description

This Burmese Buddha head, dating from the 19th–20th century, is a fine example of the serene Buddhist imagery associated with the Shan tradition of Myanmar (Burma).

The Buddha's face is characterised by gently downcast eyes, softly arched eyebrows and a subtle, peaceful smile, conveying a wonderful sense of calm and contemplation. The elongated earlobes symbolise the Buddha's renunciation of worldly wealth, while the tightly curled hair is a traditional feature of Buddhist sculpture.

The head retains areas of rich gold lacquer against a contrasting dark surface, creating a particularly striking appearance. The worn gilding and aged finish lend the piece considerable character, highlighting the delicate modelling of the face.

There is historic damage and loss to the rear of the head, leaving the interior exposed. This has been preserved as part of the object's history and does not detract from its striking frontal appearance.

Now displayed on a modern metal stand with a substantial black base, this evocative piece makes a beautiful sculptural ornament, equally suited to a contemporary or traditional interior.
