This refined low table originates from Shanxi province in Northern China and dates to the 19th century. Crafted from northern elm (yumu 榆木) paired with catalpa (tongmu 桐木), it belongs to the long regional tradition of furniture made for life around the kang, where families gathered to eat, talk and work on a warmed platform during the winter months. Its sculptural cabriole legs and quietly balanced proportions closely relate to the Shanxi examples illustrated in Karen Mazurkewich’s Chinese Furniture: A Guide to Collecting Antiques, particularly the low kang tables shown in Figs. 242 to 246, which demonstrate a preference for elegant leg profiles and restrained decorative detail.

The table has developed a deep, naturally mellow patina that enriches the grain of the elm and softens the crisp outline of the top. This layered surface speaks to generations of use and gives the piece a grounded, versatile presence that suits both traditional interiors and calm contemporary spaces. It works beautifully as a coffee table or as a low platform for displaying selected objects.
