Description

This beautiful 18th-century Tibetan Choksar (or chöksar) prayer table is a wonderfully preserved example of traditional Himalayan monastic furniture. These low tables were used by Buddhist monks to support sacred scriptures and manuscripts during prayer, study and chanting, and were an important feature of Tibetan temples and monasteries.

At the centre, an ornate vessel holds a collection of sacred objects, including a conch shell, musical instruments and precious jewels, symbolising spiritual abundance and good fortune. The vessel rests upon a magnificent spreading lotus flower, a powerful Buddhist symbol of purity and enlightenment. Flowing foliage and stylised flowers complete the composition.

As with many surviving Tibetan and Mongolian religious pieces, this table had accumulated layers of yak butter residue from the lamps traditionally burned within monasteries. Our restoration team has carefully removed this build-up using conservation techniques that preserve the original painted decoration, revealing the vibrant colours beneath while retaining the wonderful patina and character acquired over centuries of use.
