This striking 19th-century bleached teak takhat from Hyderabad is a superb example of traditional Indian craftsmanship, originally made as a daybed platform and now beautifully suited as a substantial coffee table. Solid and architectural in form, the takhat would have served as a central element within the home — used for reclining, socialising and receiving guests — reflecting its importance in domestic life.

Crafted from dense teak, the apron is richly decorated with hand-carved bands of geometric and stylised motifs, including repeating star details and finely notched borders. The carving is framed by original iron strapwork at the corners, reinforcing the structure while adding a subtle industrial contrast to the warm timber. The turned legs lift the platform elegantly, giving the piece a sense of balance and proportion. The bleached finish enhances the natural grain of the teak and highlights the depth of the carving, while retaining the texture and character of the antique surface.

With its generous proportions and low profile, this takhat makes an impressive rustic centrepiece for a living room, conservatory or summer house. Its broad top and robust construction speak to its original purpose, while its sculptural detailing ensures it remains both functional and decorative.
