This 19th-century carved stone lamp niche from Rajasthan is a beautifully preserved architectural fragment, once set into the wall of a traditional home to hold a small oil lamp or candle. Hand-carved from dense local sandstone, the niche features a deeply recessed central chamber framed by flowing vegetal motifs—stylised leaves and flame-like forms that echo the flicker of the lamp it once held. These carvings are typical of rural Rajasthani craftsmanship, where even utilitarian elements were given decorative care.
The lower ledge is shaped with a row of carved petal forms, adding both visual balance and a sense of rhythm to the piece. Its gently weathered surface, softened by time, attests to many decades of use beside a family doorway. Now fitted with a new hanger at the back, it can be easily displayed on a modern wall—either as a sculptural object or as a functional niche once more.
